Your Bio

My name is Mark Jones.
Born in the UK in 1960, I have spent most of my life in Australia.
I have been taking photos for the last 20 years, and currently produce one calendar a year. More recently I returned to the UK to see where I was born and catch up on some fantastic history. It was more spectacular than I had expected, and as I left there when I was 7 years old, it was more spectacular than I remembered. To see things that were built 1000 to 2000 years ago is just mind boggling. In Australia, we don't have that sort of thing, and until you see it you can not appreciate it. Images taken whilst there are now in my Gallery and also available in my new book "Britain In Ruins". Please enjoy.
I regularily enter my work in local and international competitions, which enables me to be critical of the standard of work I produce against what other photographers are producing, this in return ensures that there is always the opportunity for continual improvement. I have been fortunate to have had success in most competitions, with a number of images being accepted for exhibitions. Most recently 6 images being accepted for the Warragul National 2008, followed by 7 images accepted in the Pakenham National 2008.
I teach photography part time, and fully enjoy the excitement that comes from seeing people produce wonderful images, where previously they struggled to understand what photography is about.
I work in as pure a form as possible with the photographs that I take, with the majority of finished images being as they were seen through the view finder. For me, "photography is the art of capturing an image, a moment in time, that will never repeat itself, never be the same again".
I am also very happy experimenting with light, to create many different images without photoshop manipulation, working especially in low light situations and adding my own touch to the subject. I believe that as much as possible, photographers should look closely at the images of others, which is what I do, and in doing so I look for my own way of creating something similar, and if it has been done digitally, then using all that I have learnt, to create it in my own way, by using the basic techniques that apply to photography.
Photography is a medium that due to the digital age has become accessable to so many people, of so many diverse backgrounds. With that accessability, and now ease of use, people are less inclined to explore the boundaries and think outside the square, so to speak. I only hope that my work can give others ideas and inspirations to explore as I have, and learn more about this wonderful medium.
The equipment I use is a Canon 5D, 400D and 20D (Which has just been converted to produce infra red only images), Sigma Lenses, 300-800 zoom, 12 - 24 Wide angle, 170-500 zoom, 50mm Macro and an 18-55 Canon lens. I carry a Vanguard Tracker 4 heavy duty tripod and a Manfroto Prob Duo tripod. I also have a Lens Baby, as well as a Sigma Ring Flash for macro work. All my gear is carried in Lowe Pro Backpacks.
I also use Canon EOS 5, Mamiya 645 and Hasseblad XPan film cameras, although the use of these has reduced dramatically over the last year or so.
The majority of my print work is done using a Canon i9950 printer, printing on Ilford Galleria paper.
